Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR)


For students and current health care professionals seeking cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, Brightwood College offers our Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers short course. Our training follows the American Heart Association curriculum, and helps prepare you to perform not only CPR, but also first aid and injury treatment in several life-threatening situations to adults, children, and infants.

Basic Life Support Course Description

At Brightwood College, our BLS for Healthcare Providers course combines in-class lecture with hands-on demonstrations and training. Instruction includes how to do the following:

  • Perform CPR for victims of all ages
  • Properly use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Provide relief to choking victims and execute the Heimlich maneuver
  • Respond to two-person rescue scenarios
  • Recognize several life-threatening emergencies, with training in adult first aid, injury emergencies, and environmental emergency preparedness

The BLS for Healthcare Providers certification course is completed in one day. Before receiving certification, you will be required to complete the entire training and must pass a written and skills examination.

BLS Course Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the short course will receive their Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification through the American Heart Association, valid for 2 years from the date of completion. This certificate may be a requirement for those working in:

  • Various health care professions
  • Childcare
  • Lifeguarding

Students will also be awarded a certificate of completion from Brightwood College.

Note: This is a non-credit-bearing course. Students must not assume that this course will be accepted for transfer credit at another institution. This course does not qualify for Title IV federal financial aid funds. The institution does not offer job placement assistance for short courses; finding a job is the individual responsibility of the student.
