Dental Assistant Infection Control

When working in a dental office and handling dental equipment, having an understanding of dental infection control is important to not only the safety of your patients, but also to yourself and colleagues. Our Dental Assistant Infection Control course is intended to prepare dental assistants and registered dental assistants with instruction and practice in sterilization procedures.

Dental Assistant Infection Control Course Description

The Dental Assistant Infection Control course may include both classroom and online activities such as video, tests/quizzes, simulations, and discussion boards. Instruction includes topics such as:

  • Autoclaving
  • Preparation for sterilization and disinfection
  • Surface disinfection
  • Sterilization of instruments
  • Mechanical barriers
  • Infection control protocol and regulations

Course Outcomes

Graduates of the program are awarded a certificate of completion from Brightwood College. Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate procedures for donning Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), environmental barriers, hand washing, surface and impression disinfection, sterilization, sharps management, and their corresponding procedures in the dental office
  • Characterize the general factors of microbiology as they apply to infection control
  • Identify the function of the specific agencies (OSHA, EPA, FDA, CDC, and DB) enforcing universal precautions

The Dental Assistant Infection Control course is graded on a pass/fail basis.
