If you are a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) or vocational nursing (VN) graduate seeking to expand your skill set, the intravenous therapy and blood withdrawal course at Brightwood College could help you gain the knowledge and technical skills needed to safely set up and maintain intravenous therapies and blood withdrawal in a clinical setting.*

Intravenous (IV) Therapy and Blood Withdrawal Course Description

Course work consists of both lecture hours and hands-on clinical work.

Lecture topics include:

  • Psychological preparation of the patient
  • Universal precautions for infection control
  • Indications and clinical implications for intravenous and blood withdrawal

Clinical topics include:

  • Preparation of intravenous equipment
  • Administration of IV medication
  • Blood withdrawal
  • How to safely choose the correct vein
  • Skin puncture
  • Infection control

In addition, each student must complete a minimum of three individually supervised successful venipunctures and three individually supervised skin punctures on live human subjects.

Course Outcomes

The intravenous therapy and blood draw course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Graduates of this program are awarded a certificate of completion from Brightwood College.
