Computer numerical control machinists (CNC machinists) take complex blueprints and program them into computer numerical control machines to manufacture parts that meet exact design specifications.

Programming and operating CNC machines requires specialized training in CNC technology. At Brightwood College, you can get the training you need to pursue an entry-level position as a CNC machinist. You will have the opportunity to apply the concepts you learn to manufacture precision products and establish a basic understanding of CAD/CMA software.

What Is Computer Numerical Control Technology?

Computer numerical control (CNC) technology uses machines to automate manufacturing operations that need to be efficient and uniform. Functions such as drilling holes, cutting, milling, turning, grooving and threading can all be programmed into CNC machines, which cut away material from solid blocks of metal, plastic, or glass to form a finished part design that meets precise specifications.

CNC machines are capable of producing high quality parts under the supervision of skilled CNC operators. Programming and operating CNC equipment can require specialized training.

Learn the Craft of CNC Machining

It takes technical and mechanical skills and an understanding of tooling to operate CNC machines. Our CNC training program is designed to prepare you for entry-level work in the manufacturing industry. You will receive hands-on training in labs that utilize the equipment typically found in real-world machine shops.

The Computer Numerical Control Diploma program at Brightwood College focuses on helping you understand how machine processes work and how to operate CNC lathes and mills. We combine interactive lessons with practice applications to help you develop and implement the skills you will need in general machinist jobs. You could have the opportunity to perform set-ups for a number of CNC operations including milling, drilling, boring, grooving and threading.

In our computer numerical control classes, you could learn how to:

  • Operate CNC lathes and milling machines using CAD/CAM
  • Cut and shape parts to print specifications
  • Read and interpret industrial drawings
  • Use a personal computer to create and manage files
  • Use precision measuring tools, including micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators

Hands-On CAD and CAM Training

CNC machines rely on computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to manufacture accurate parts. This means that CNC machine operators often have to use these tools to complete their work orders.

Our CNC program offers students training in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software as it relates to the manufacture of parts on CNC machines. In their coursework, students will have the opportunity to understand and discuss the concept and advantages of CAD/CAM, as well as perform procedures on a CNC lathe and milling machine using CAD/CAM.

CNC Machine Operator Career Opportunities

Upon graduating with a CNC diploma, you will have an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills to pursue entry-level positions in various manufacturing capacities including:

  • General and CNC machining
  • Mold making
  • Tool and die making
  • Quality control in the manufacturing industry

You may seek employment as a machinist or related position in machine shops or plants that manufacture plastics products, machinery, or aerospace and automobile parts.

CNC Machine Operator Salary

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the average salary for machinists is $42,110 with an average hourly pay of $20.25.* If you would like to work with your hands and apply practical knowledge to a useful trade, consider training to become a CNC machinist.
