At Brightwood College, you could train to become a healthcare aide in as little as nine months. We offer diverse training in front office administration, rehabilitation, and general nursing skills. Our Healthcare Assistant program is designed to prepare you for a career as a multi-skilled healthcare assistant.

You could gain the relevant skills to provide holistic nursing and rehabilitation assistance under the supervision of licensed professionals. Earning a Healthcare Assistant Diploma could prepare you to work with patients who have a variety of diseases, injuries, neurological disabilities, or orthopedic problems.

A Comprehensive Healthcare Assistant Program

The program offers diverse front office training, hands-on functional rehabilitation coursework, and general nursing skills including clinical experience. Our instructors bring real-world experience to your healthcare assistant classes. They can help you gain knowledge of basic medical terminology and gain skills for the treatment techniques used in assisted living.

Our home health aide training covers bed and wheelchair exercises that help patients’ maintain functional abilities. You could also learn about the risk factors of immobility and the importance of early intervention. Our Healthcare Assistant program is designed to equip you with a broad foundation in the administrative and clinical aspects of healthcare assistance.

You could learn about the following topics:

  • Ambulation and transfers
  • Daily living support
  • Catheter care
  • Patient and group treatment
  • Basics of phlebotomy and EKGs
  • Documenting patient information, medication, and prescriptions
  • Overview of body systems
  • Pain management techniques

Hands-On Healthcare Assistant Training

Our healthcare assistant courses combine clinical and administrative instruction with hands-on experience. Labs and clinical settings are active training grounds for you to develop the nursing and rehabilitative skills for work as a nurse aide. You will have the opportunity to practice capillary draws and venipuncture, measuring vital signs, and assisting with range of motion exercises.

Developing your clinical skills is important for a career in healthcare assistance. As a part of our health care assistant training, you will complete a clinical and externship. These are opportunities for you to practice applying the skills and knowledge you’ve learned in class to real-world scenarios. You can gain on-the-job training under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs), physicians, or other healthcare professionals.

Healthcare Assistant Certifications

Becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) can help you stand out from other job candidates and increase your credentials as you search for healthcare assistant jobs. Most states require nursing assistants to be certified or licensed.

Certification is required for nurse assistant jobs in California. Successful completion of this program is intended to prepare eligible students for the following certification exam:†

Students who wish to apply for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 Examination issued by the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services Unit will be required to complete an additional 40 hour externship at an approved Phlebotomy site. Certification is required for employment as a phlebotomy technician in California. Visit for more information.
